The city of Palm Desert is located in southern California about 14 miles to the east of the city of Palm Springs. The history of the Palm Desert community can be traced back to early 20th century with the establishment of early settlements of the area known as Old MacDonald Ranch and Palm Village.

Palm Desert showed impressive growth in the late 20th century with the population of the community doubling nearly twice between 1980 and 2000. The population of Palm Desert swells considerably in the winter months with part time residents who keep a temporary home in the area to flee the cold weather. 

Shopping and Dining

The many shopping centers located in and around Palm Desert make the community a popular shopping destination. Area shopping centers include Westfield Palm Desert, The Gardens on El Paseo, and The River at Rancho Mirage. All of these shopping destinations feature a variety of dining options in addition to retail shopping establishments. Popular fine dining restaurants near Palm Desert real estate include Cork Tree California Cuisine on Country Club Drive, Mimmo's Italian Restaurant & Bar on Highway 111, and The Venue Sushi Bar & Sake Lounge on El Paseo. 

Parks and Recreation

Altogether, there are 14 different parks located in the city of Palm Desert. Some of the most prominent parks and natural areas in and around the city include the Coachella Valley Fringe-Toed Lizard Preserve, Civic Center Park, and Palm Desert Community Park. There are many different country clubs located in Palm Desert that offer city residents recreational opportunities such as golfing and tennis. Residents of Palm Desert real estate can stay in shape by taking advantage of fitness centers such as World Gym on Town Center Way, Gold's Gym on Airport Center Drive, and The Basic Gym on South Palm Canyon Drive. 

Living

The city of Palm Desert features an older population with a median resident age that is almost 20 years higher than the average median age for communities in all of California on average. While the cost of living in Palm Desert is fairly high in comparison to the rest of the country overall, the median home value in Palm Desert is more than $60,000 less than the median home value in California overall. A low unemployment rate in Palm Desert attests to a fairly strong economy in this California city, and much of the growth in the population of Palm Desert has consisted of newcomers looking to take advantage of the low cost and high value of Palm Desert real estate. 

Schools, Health, and Transportation

Palm Desert offers both private and public educational institutions for students studying at all grade levels, from kindergarten up through high school. Palm Desert High School is the major public high school in the city and has a student enrollment of around 2,200 students. This school is part of the Desert Sands Unified School District. Private schools in Palm Desert include Desert Adventist Academy, Sacred Heart Catholic Academy, and the Xavier Preparatory High School. Young residents of Palm Desert real estate can continue their education on to the university level at College of the Desert, a local community college. 

Health care is provided to residents of Palm Desert at Palm Desert Urgent CareEisenhower Immediate Care Center on Country Club Drive, Desert Regional Medical Center on North Indian Canyon Road, and at the John F. Kennedy Hospital in Indio.

Some public transportation options are provided in Palm Desert through the SunLine Transit Agency, which offers bus service around the Coachella Valley. Additional transportation services are provided to the city of Palm Desert at the Amtrak station located at Monterey Avenue and San Gorgonio Way. The Palm Springs International Airport connects Palm Desert with a variety of different domestic destinations and a few destinations in Canada.
