Palm Springs, California, located about 100 mile east of Los Angeles, is a desert oasis that has been a favorite vacation and retirement spot for golf lovers and sports enthusiasts--as well as movie stars--for decades. The city of around 45,000 permanent residents offers more than 100 golf courses as well as ample opportunity for hiking, biking horseback riding and tennis.

Shopping and dining

Palm Springs offers a myriad of shopping opportunities. Among these are the unique retailers in the downtown and Uptown Design District shopping areas, the art galleries of the Backstreet Art District and the 180 discount retailers at the Desert Hills Outlet Center.

Palm Springs real estate owners need never go hungry. The city features a diverse collection of eateries, everything from Mediterranean cuisine to American burgers. Local favorites include The Tropicale for seafood, Cheeky's Palm Springs for burgers and other American favorites and the Chop House for steaks.

Parks and recreation

One of the best things about owning Palm Springs real estate is the vast number of golf courses, parks and other recreational facilities in and around the city. The City of Palm Springs owns and manages 10 parks and a community recreation center, with amenities that include dog runs, picnic facilities, ball parks, tennis courts, hiking and biking trails and playgrounds.

The area is well known for its more than 100 golf courses, including the two PGA West courses, designed by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. The area is a regular stop on both the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour.

Just outside of Palm Springs is the 31,000-acre Big Morongo Canyon Preserve with its variety of wildlife and plant life as well as hiking, biking and rock climbing opportunities.

Palm Springs real estate runs the gamut from one-bedroom, one-bath condos to modest cottage-style homes to mid-20th century ranch-style homes to large, multi-acre estates. There's really something for every taste and budget in Palm Springs.

Palm Springs is divided into 33 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own ambiance, amenities and architectural style. The "Movie Colony" neighborhoods, which developed in the 1930s, was once home to Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. The Tahquitz River Estates, the largest Palm Springs neighborhood with more than 600 homes, sits directly on the Tahquitz Creek Golf Course in the center of town. The Mesa, another historic Palm Springs neighborhood, is located on the west side of town and was once home to Clark Gable, Zane Grey and Suzanne Somers.

Schools, health and transportation

Children of Palm Springs real estate owners attend the schools of the Palm Springs Unified School District. The district, which has an enrollment of around 27,000 students, owns and manages 13 schools in Palm Springs, including five elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and six special interest and adult education schools. In addition to the public schools, Palm Spring is home to several private schools, such as Desert Chapel Christian School and Xavier College Preparatory High School.

For post-secondary education, Palm Springs offers the College of the Desert, a community college. There is also a branch of California State University in nearby San Bernardino.

Palm Springs residents have ample health care facilities. Among these are the Desert Regional Medical Center, a 387-bed acute care facility located in the heart of the city. Of course, some of the best-ranked hospitals in the country, including the UCLA Medical Center, are located less than a two-hour drive away in Los Angeles.

It's easy to get around Palm Springs. The city sits directly on I-10, which connects the city to San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Santa Monica to the east. SunLine Transit Agency provides regular bus service within Palm Springs and between Palm Springs and other points in Coachella Valley. For trips outside of the region, Palm Springs International Airport, located on the east side of town, offers non-stop service between Palm Springs and cities throughout the United States and Canada, including San Francisco, Vancouver and Dallas.
