Rancho Mirage is an incorporated city in the Coachella Valley of Riverside County. Its neighbors are Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Cathedral City, and La Quinta. This city is a vibrant, year-round community with approximately 17,000 residents living in homes and condos in or around the city's 12 golf courses.

Perhaps the most notable residents of this area were Walter and Leonore Annenberg who owned Sunnylands, a major part of Rancho Mirage real estate. Publisher Walter Annenberg was appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom during the administration of his friend President Ronald Reagan, a frequent visitor to his estate.

Shopping and Dining

The River at Rancho Mirage is the premier shopping area in this community. Shops offer resort wear, jewelry, beauty salons and spas, and restaurants.

The Omni Mission Hills Resort, the Westin, and the Agua Caliente Casino Resort and Spa all offer complete message and facial spa treatments. This casino and spa, located at 32-250 Bob Hope Drive, is managed by the Agua Caliente tribe and offers dining, entertainment, and gambling.

Wally's Desert Turtle is the most famous restaurant in Rancho Mirage. This legendary restaurant is located at 71775 Highway 111. It was founded by Wally Botello and now managed by his son, Michael. Diners here often see celebrity athletes and entertainers enjoying the cuisine.

Parks and Recreation

Rancho Mirage operates a variety of parks and trail sites. Many of the parks feature gardens and walking paths. The most full-featured park, Whitewater Park, includes a playground, picnic facilities, basketball and racquetball courts, and restrooms. Hiking trails range from easy to moderate and the Clancy Lane Trail allows bicycles and horses.

Addition recreation facilities in the area include Palm Desert Community Center, Family YMCA of the Desert, and Legends Fields. As with all of the desert communities, golf and tennis are major draws for residents and visitors alike.

Rancho Mirage real estate includes the Mission Hills Golf and Country Club, home of the LPGA Colgate-Palmolive Dinah Shore Golf Tournament established in 1972. This popular tournament became the Nabisco Dinah Shore Classic, a major LPGA event, in 1983.

Now called the Kraft-Nabisco Championship, the annual LPGA tournament is played at Mission Hills every spring on the Dinah Shore Course. This is the women's golf equivalent of the Masters, played on the course named for the legendary singer and television personality who died in 1994.

The 1988 winner, Amy Alcott, started the tradition of jumping into the lake on the 18th hole after finishing the tournament. She has been followed by Kerri Webb and 21 other winning golfers.

Condominiums around the prestigious Mission Hills Country Club resort that covers 1,760 acres start at approximately $235,000 for two bedrooms and bathrooms and 1,500 square feet. Golf course homes with pools start at approximately $500,000 for four bedrooms and bathrooms and 2,600+ square feet.

Other courses at Mission Hills with surrounding homes, many in the $1 million plus range, include the Arnold Palmer and Pete Dye Challenge courses.

The Rancho Mirage Country Club sits at the intersection of Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra Drives. This piece of Rancho Mirage real estate is open to the public with 6,111 yards of fairways and greens from the back tees. It is a par-70 for men and par-72 for women. A restaurant and clubhouse with a pro shop and driving range are part of the course.

Homes overlooking the Rancho Mirage golf course start around $450,000.

Visitors will also find the Marriott Rancho Las Palmas courses, Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort with the Gary Player Signature Course, and the Desert Island Country Club. The Springs, Tamarisk, Thunderbird, and Sunrise are private golf clubs with homes that are part of Rancho Mirage real estate. Most of the residential areas at the county clubs have homeowner associations that are separate from club membership.

The Mission Hills Tennis Club, part of the country club, offers the Reed Anderson Tennis School at 34600 Mission Hills Drive. The Tennis Club includes 10 hard courts, four clay courts and 10 courts for lawn tennis.

The "Champions Club" offers four casitas for students attending the tennis school. Tennis instruction includes half and full-day programs along with a special three-day tennis camp. This is one of the best programs for analyzing strokes, court position, and other techniques.

Tennis courts are available at the Westin Mission Hills, Marriott Rancho Las Palmas, and The Spring Club.
